Alarming Disappearances of Women and Girls in Uttarakhand: Urgent Need for Enhanced Safety Measure : In Uttarakhand, 3854 women and 1134 girls have gone missing in less than two and a half years, while 2961 missing women and 1042 missing girls have been found during the same period.
The revelation comes from information accessed by Right to Information activist Nadeem Uddin through the police headquarters. Despite claims of women’s safety and protection of women’s rights in Uttarakhand, the reality appears to be far from it.
From January 2021 to May 2023, a total of 3854 women have been reported missing in 13 districts of Uttarakhand and the railway region (under the GRP). Among them, 1494 were reported missing in 2021, 1632 in 2022, and 728 up to May 2023. During this period, a total of 1132 girls have also gone missing, with 404 in 2021, 425 in 2022, and 305 up to May 2023.
According to the available data on the recovery of missing women, from January 2021 to May 2023, a total of 2961 women have been found. Among them, 1271 were found in 2021, 1281 in 2022, and 409 up to May 2023. During the same period, a total of 1042 missing girls have been recovered, with 393 in 2021, 403 in 2022, and 246 up to May 2023.
The data also reveals district-wise statistics for missing women and girls in Uttarakhand, highlighting areas with a higher incidence of disappearances. These alarming numbers underscore the urgent need for improved women and child safety measures, awareness campaigns, and legal enforcement to protect their rights and well-being.
